ONLINE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

“Traditions and Modernization in the Politics and Law of Russia, China and Vietnam”

 Monday and Tuesday, 1st-2nd November 2021

Dear Friend/Colleague,

Vietnam, Russia and China used to share a common socialist/communist political-legal tradition. However, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, they all reformed their political institutions and laws to suit the new requirements, local contexts and traditions. Currently, these countries are still in the transition process looking for reforms, changes and modernization based on their national traditions in politics and law. Therefore, each country has experiences and lessons to share with other countries on the handling of the relationship between traditions and modernization in politics and law.

In that context, an online international conference titled “Traditions and Modernization in the Politics and Law of Russia, China, and Vietnamwill be co-hosted on 1st-2nd November 2021 by:

·                     Faculty of Political Science, Lomonosov Moscow University (Russia)

·                     School of International Law, China University of Political Science and Law (China)

·                     School of Law, Vietnam National University Hanoi (Vietnam)

·                     Graduate Academy of Social Sciences, Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences (Vietnam)  

·                     Institute of State and Law, Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics (Vietnam)

The themes of the online conference will include:

·                     Theories, approaches to solve the relationship between traditions and modernization in politics and law in selected countries.

·                     Inheritance, continuation, discontinuities or conflicts between traditions and the requirements for political and legal modernization in selected countries.

·                     Positive and negative influences of traditions in today's politics and law in selected countries.

·                     Contexts, needs, requirements, content, and outcomes of the modernization in politics and law in selected countries.

·                     Advantages, barriers and challenges for the modernization in politics and law in selected countries.

·                     Impact of globalization and integration on the modernization in politics and law in selected countries.

·                     Trends in resolving the relationship between traditions and modernization in politics and law in selected countries.

·                     Good and bad lessons learned in resolving the relationship between traditions and modernization in politics and law in selected countries.

·                     Specific traditions: communist/socialist tradition; European/civil tradition; Asian traditions and values; national/local traditions.

·                     Specific modernization perspectives: radical changes (Russia from Soviet Union); Chinese Model; Gradual Transition (Doi moi in Vietnam)…  

We are inviting scholars and practitioners working in this area to submit abstracts that would fit within the broad theme of the conference.

Online Platform

The conference will take place online via the Zoom Meetings platform and will be hosted by the School of Law at Vietnam National University Hanoi. Zoom’s link and ID: To be notified to particpants’ emails submitted to the registration form

Submission of Abstracts

Authors should submit a 200-400 word abstract, which includes a title of the proposed paper and his/her short biographical details (including name, email, academic appointment, affiliations).

Submission of Draft Papers

Draft papers (in English/Chinese/Russian/Vietnamese) are encouraged (but not required) to be submitted  prior to the conference, as it would be very useful for the moderators, disscussants and participants to read papers in advanced in order to have deep questions, comments and feed back. Under agreement with authors, submitted papers will be uploaded to the conference website.

Please submit draft papers (if available) to Dr. Bui Tien Dat at buidat@vnu.edu.vn (cc: vnulsgoodgovernance@gmail.com) by 25th October 2021 to be included on the website prior to the conference.

Publication of conference proceedings book

Selected papers (in English/Chinese/Russian/Vietnamese) will be published in the conference proceedings book, under agreement with authors. The conference proceedings book will not be published for commercial purposes. Conference attendance and publication are free; however, there is no remuneration or royalties for papers submitted to and published in the conference proceedings book.

To be included in the conference proceedings book, full papers (preferably 4000 – 6000 words, inclusive of footnotes) are to be submitted by 30th November 2021 to Dr. Bui Tien Dat at buidat@vnu.edu.vn (cc: buitiendat2001@yahoo.com).

To facilitate the editing process, we would appreciate it if you could adhere to the submission deadline and follow the specifications below in preparing your conference paper.

               Paper Title, Author's Title and Name, University/Organisation, and Email Address

               Font: Times New Roman, size 12

               Single line spacing of text throughout

               Microsoft Word Document Format (.doc or .docx)

               Length: no more than 10,000 words, inclusive of footnotes (4000 to 6000-word papers are preferred)

Conference attendance is free, however registration is essential (for both authors and participants without papers). Guidelines for conference attendance and further information will be sent to you via email and provided on the conference website.
