On July 8, 2023, in Da Nang
City, The VNU University of Law (VNU-UL) with the assistance of FES, Vietnam
Office, held a workshop on "Development trends of Vietnamese law on
evidence and proving crimes in criminal proceedings".
The workshop included the participation of Mr. Timo Rinke - Chief Representative of FES in Vietnam; Mrs. Tran Hong Hanh - Program Officer; Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Thi Que Anh – Rector of VNU-UL; Assoc. Trinh Tien Viet - Vice Rector of VNU-UL and lecturers of the Faculty of Criminal Justice of the University. Numerous experts, including Prof. Dr. Dao Tri Uc, Chairman of the Council of Professors of Law; Prof. Dr. Do Van Quang, Former member of the NA National Defense and Security Committee; Assoc.Prof.Dr. Tran Van Do, Former Deputy Chief Justice of the Supreme People's Court, Chief Justice of the Central Military Court; and a number of lawyers, judges, and experts from various institutions were present at the workshop.
Speaking at the opening,
Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Thi Que Anh expressed her sincere thanks to the scholars
and practitioners who took the time to write articles and attend the workshop.
She highly regarded the theoretical and practical significance of this
scientific event. "The workshop is an opportunity for criminal experts to
identify and forecast new trends in the institution of evidence and proving
crimes - a backbone institution of the criminal procedure law. It is also a
forum for people who are shouldering the responsibility of proving crimes to
share their practical lessons so that we could learn from and continue to
perfect the criminal procedure law and improve its practice efficiency"
the Rector said.
Giving a speech at the workshop, Mr. Timo Rinke thanked experts and the University of Law for organizing this scientific event. "I'm impressed by the scientific spirit, and interesting perspectives exchanged among experts and practitioners," he said. He also pledged that FES will continue to effectively accompany VNU-UL in the coming time. The workshop consisted of four sessions.
In the first session "Identifying development trends of Vietnamese law on evidence and proving crimes in criminal proceedings", experts discussed the trends of the law on evidence and proving crimes and requirements in the new context; perfecting the Vietnamese law on evidence and proving crimes to meet the requirements of judicial reform; ...
The second session discussed "Vietnamese law on evidence and proving crimes in criminal proceedings - from an interdisciplinary approach to law", in which the speakers discussed the evidence in civil, administrative, criminal cases, ... In the third session, the scholars discussed the experiences of some countries such as the US, France, Russia... and the fundamental principles applied to evidence and proving crimes in the modern world; issues related to evidence and proving crimes in the context of building and operating e-courts, online adjudication, virtual currency,... In the fourth session, experts discussed the application of the law on evidence and proving crimes in some major current cases. The workshop gave many valuable ideas and suggestions. After the workshop, the organizing committee expected to publish proceedings to serve training and research activities.
